How to use display cases to decorate your home

They bring light and complement spaces well. But avoid the bazaar or mini-museum effect.

Le showcases (Cabinet with glass doors) are an excellent furnishing element because they combine function and aesthetics: they protect objects from dust while simultaneously displaying them, and at the same time create a furnishing element that also brings light and diversity to the rooms. Use them wisely. forIt makes the difference between an elegant piece of furniture and a "chaotic" one. And the risk of wasting a display case, turning it into a bazaar, or an unrealistic mini-home museum, is always very high.

Things to do

The basic rule is to avoid overcrowding a display case. The following work well:
  • objects in collection (ceramics, miniatures, rare books)
  • glass and crystal
  • pieces with sentimental or aesthetic value
  • few "strong" elements instead of many small ones

If everything is important, nothing is truly visually important.

Once you have established what you want to show with your display case, it is essential to place the pieces inside in a very orderly fashion, alternating different heights (for give movement to a piece of furniture that for its nature is static) and choosing neutral colors (from white to beige), certainly the most elegant and most suitable.

The light

Light is essential, and the alternatives to choose from are these:
  • LED interior or light strips enhance objects
  • warm lights = welcoming atmosphere
  • cold lights = modern/gallery style

A well-lit display cabinet becomes a focal point of the room.

Most suitable materials

The most classic and versatile material is definitely wood.

Effect:

  • warm, welcoming, “domestic”

Ideal for:

  • traditional or rustic stays
  • classic or Scandinavian style

Pro:

  • very decorative even when closed
  • si easily matches with other furniture
  • great durability (especially solid wood)

Against:

  • It can be visually heavy if too dark
  • requires coherence with other furnishings

Glass

It is the central element of the shop windows, and si presents with some variations.

Effect:

  • light, elegant, “display-worthy”

Variants:

  • transparent → maximum visibility
  • smoked → more modern and sophisticated
  • satin → partially hides the contents

Pro:

  • enhances objects
  • lightens the structure

Against:

  • requires internal order (si sees everything)

Metal (steel, iron, aluminum)

Widely used in modern shop windows.

Effect:

  • industrial, minimal, contemporary

Ideal for:

  • lofts, urban environments, modern houses

Pro:

  • thin and resistant structure
  • perfect for light and “open” designs

Against:

  • It can feel cold if not balanced with wood or fabrics

Things to avoid

  • Closet effect. A display case, even if small, should never be confused with a small storage area. An elegant display case always has "designed spaces," not just solids.
  • Bazaar effect. Even the objects chosen must have a logic and coherence, and should not be placed in a jumble as if we were in an antique shop.
  • Museum effect. Don't overdo the importance you want your mini-exhibition to have. Your home isn't a museum, and the guests who visit aren't visitors.
  • Not cleaning as often as you should. Shop windows attract dust, and when si accumulates, the feeling of dirt and disorder becomes immediate.
  • Not respecting the style of the room. just why si It is a piece of furniture, the display case must be integrated with the style that dominates the room where you are placing it.
