The fight against water waste must begin immediately, by teaching children about it. Even when they are very young. It is essential to teach them, in a simple, gentle way, and without unnecessary imposition, how to use water correctly , which they, partly through our own fault, might consider a limitless resource and therefore worth wasting. Hence, for example, the importance of turning off the taps when brushing our teeth, not constantly flushing the toilet, and not playing too much with water pumps . And from here, we can then move on to the very close relationship between reducing water waste and our dietary lifestyles.

HOW TO TEACH CHILDREN NOT TO WASTE WATER

It's about explaining to children, even through play, how precious water is, for everyone and everywhere . How much is wasted in some nations, and how much water is lacking in others, where there is poverty , famine, and war. Even the drought, which is affecting many regions of Italy, is now affecting them. Especially with children, we need to start with the simplest, everyday gestures, like washing and eating. If we can pass these skills on to children, the adults of tomorrow, one day not far off, will automatically know how to truly respect and protect the essential nature of this resource.

And here are five important tips for everyone, young and old, on how to reduce water waste in relation to food :

  • Abstaining from meat for a day means reducing your water footprint by about 1.300 liters. Eating white meat, on the other hand, significantly lowers our water footprint.
  • When we eat meat, we favor pasture-raised meat. Meat from animals fed grains—often derived from irrigated crops—and fed industrial feed or factory-produced concentrates requires much more water (up to five times more) than that from pasture-raised animals.
  • Increase the frequency of food purchases and decrease the quantity. Throwing away food means throwing away money and scarce resources, like water.
  • Choose seasonal and local products: they are generally more environmentally friendly.
