How to prepare natural detergents

Marseille soap and baking soda for floors. Linseed oil and beeswax for parquet. Lemon for washing dishes and vegetable soap for the washing machine.

DIY detergents: recipes to make them at home and avoid wasting money
Natural detergents are easy to make and offer several advantages. First, you save money and avoid wasting money on industrial products that can be very expensive (especially if you use them compulsively). Second, you make a truly sustainable choice, as you avoid the pollution risk associated with using detergents containing chemical ingredients. And more: the results are excellent, if the recipes for natural detergents are applied correctly.

Marseille soap, baking soda, lemons, essential oils: the ingredients and preparation of natural detergents They vary based on what we need to clean (a floor, dishes, an appliance) and for each circumstance there is the right preparation.

Marseille soap and baking soda for floors

To have shiny floors, whether they are marble, stone, ceramic, porcelain stoneware or granite, you can prepare a detergent based on Marseille soap and baking soda.

  • Filled a bucket with about 3 liters of water and then add three teaspoons of bicarbonate and five of denatured alcohol.
  • Melt inside the preparation a small piece (10-15 grams) of Marseille soap grated and mix to combine the ingredients.
  • You can add, but it is optional, a few drops of essential oil, for example lavender or lemon.

This type of detergent can also be very effective for the carpet cleaning, and don't underestimate the steam, for natural floor cleaning.

Linseed oil and beeswax

If you have the at home parquet and you want to apply a completely eco-friendly "do-it-yourself" wax, do this:

  • Pour a measuring cup of water into a container linseed oil, four tablespoons of beeswax, four tablespoons of natural wax and half a glass of white vinegar.
  • Mix the mixture and then heat it in a saucepan until it has melted.
  • Transfer the liquid Pour it into a glass container and let it solidify in the refrigerator. It will then be ready for use.

This natural detergent based on linseed oil and beeswax should be stored in a cool, dry place.

Lemon, salt and apple cider vinegar

Dish soap can also be easily made at home and proves effective for cleaning dishes. One of the most popular recipes is this:

  • Boil in water 8 lemons for about half an hour, until they become very soft.
  • The lemons should then be cut into pieces, blended and filtered through a sieve.
  • Pour the mixture into a pan, where there are 800 ml of water, 300 grams of salt and 200 ml of apple cider vinegar.
  • The mixture must be brought to the boil and after cooling, it should be blended with an immersion blender.

The detergent thus made can be placed in an empty bottle or in a glass jar.

Vegetable soap, baking soda and lavender essential oil

Making a natural DIY laundry detergent is a great way to save money and ensure your clothes are washed with healthy ingredients that won't cause skin allergies. The best recipe is this:

  • The ingredients are: 5 liters of water, 200 grams of vegetable soap flakes, 100 grams of baking soda and 25 drops of lavender essential oil.
  • After boiling the water, grate the soap and stir until it dissolves completely.
  • After that, it is necessary add baking soda and mix again.
  • Finally, it will be the turn of the lavender oil.

At this point, the detergent is ready to be used.

Alcohol and white vinegar

If you want a natural and non-toxic glass degreaser, the recipe calls for:

  • A quarter of a liter of water, half a glass of alcohol, a few drops of dish soap and half a glass of white vinegar. 
  • After shaking the mixture well, your degreaser is ready and the results will be truly satisfying.

Natural dishwasher detergent

If you have a dishwasher, you can also make a specific detergent for this appliance.
  • Get 20 grams of soap from Marseille, 350 grams of baking soda, 150 grams of warm mineral water, 1 ml of essential oil of your choice and 20 grams of natural glycerin.
  • Mix the baking soda, the essential oil and glycerin, then add the water and mix until you obtain a thick, foamy cream.
  • Then pour the mixture into a bottle and continue mixing.

You can use this natural detergent directly in the dishwasher drawer, respecting the recommended quantities.

Natural oven detergent

The oven can also be cleaned with detergents that do not pollute and, above all, do not alter the flavor of food.

  • Make one at home with half a liter of white wine vinegar and 250 grams of salt.
  • Mix these two ingredients and when the salt has dissolved, put the liquid in a spray bottle and spray it into the warm oven.
  • Let the oven dry and cool, then remove any salt residue with a soft cloth.
