It happens often: we forget our headphones in a pair of pants that end up in the washing machine, and we find them soaked. Unusable. Yet, we have the option of not wasting them and avoiding having to buy new ones. Like in the case of the cell phone that ended up in water , for which we've explained the simple rescue technique here.
The first thing to do when your headphones end up in water is to waste no time, not give in to despair, and take action.
- Disassemble as many parts of the headphones as you can and place them on a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
- Dry the individual parts delicately with a soft, dry cloth or even with a few sheets of toilet paper.
- Don't use the dryer unit: it could be counterproductive.
- Allow the headphones to dry thoroughly and then cover them completely with rice. They should be buried under the rice, which has the ability to absorb all traces of moisture.
- Leave them in this position for a couple of days, after which The headphones should be fully functional again..
Wet headphones can only be used again once they're completely dry. Never before. The same goes for the charger: don't use it until at least 48 hours after it's been in contact with water.
An alternative to rice, also very effective, is silica gel.
- Get some silica gel bags, where you can put the various parts of the headphones you have disassembled.
- Follow the same preliminary phase that we saw, before immersing it in a dish of rice.
- Place the various parts of the headphones, once thoroughly dry, into the silica gel sachets.
- Leave them in this position for a few days and then use them again.
Headphones are quite delicate, and in order to last , they require a little maintenance. Every two weeks, for example, wipe them with a soft, dry cloth to remove any dust. And in any case, when you're not using your headphones, always make sure they're stored in their case.
Some advertisements describe AirPods, especially the latest generation, as working perfectly even in water. This isn't true. At most, they can withstand a few splashes of water , but nothing more. Furthermore, AirPods should be kept a safe distance from shampoo, soap, conditioner, perfume, and detergents. As for maintenance, they should be thoroughly cleaned with a soft, dry cloth and put back in their case only when you're sure there's no trace of water left.
