Research continues to delve deeper into the health effects of glycemia, considering the spread of diabetes on a global scale (in Italy 4 million people suffer from type 2 diabetes, the most common). The latest research from the UK Prospective Diabetes Study, and was published in the journal The Lancet: Prompt treatment of blood sugar levels, bringing them back to acceptable levels, reduces the risk of death by 10 to 20 percent, and the risk of heart attack is reduced by 30 percent. Not to mention complications, such as diabetic retinopathy, which are reduced to very low rates. The interesting thing about this study is the very large sample (5 people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes) and the length of the study (24 years).
An American study, published in the past, The Journal of the American Medical Association, had shown that improving the control of the key parameters (biomarkers) of glycated hemoglobin, body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure and cholesterol LDL can extend the life expectancy of people with type 2 diabetes by an average of three years. And, for those with very high values, bringing them back to and maintaining them in line with optimal levels can even lead to an extension of ten years.
