Giannutri Island achieves green self-sufficiency thanks to photovoltaic systems.

Clean energy for an entire island. It's happening on Giannutri , in the Tuscan archipelago, where a 65kW photovoltaic shelter will be installed to meet the residents' needs. The announcement was made by Giglio's mayor, Sergio Ortelli.

GIANNUTRI ENERGY SELF-SUFFICIENCY

The smallest island of the archipelago, located in the province of Grosseto and part of the administrative territory of the nearby island of Giglio, will thus become self-sufficient with green energy for most of the year, with the need to draw from the power plant only during the busiest summer periods.

Mayor Sergio Ortelli, following the technical and functional testing conducted in recent days, stated: "We expect to have the shelter online in March as soon as all the bureaucratic procedures are completed. In the meantime, however, our project, which was part of the 2015 Smart Island protocol and received the 'Good Practice of the Year' award, has become a reality." The protocol involved Terna Plus, Sie srl (the electricity provider for Giglio and Giannutri), and other partners, along with the Municipality. "The photovoltaic shelter," Ortelli stated, "is located on land transferred from the Ministry of the Environment to the Municipality four years ago, located near the Giannutri power plant. Once the property has been handed over to the administration, the shelter will be integrated into the island's electrical system."
