Drinking too much water is a waste that can be harmful, even if it seems strange because water is essential for life. The main problem is called hyponatremia, that is, a dangerous drop in blood sodium levels. Our body needs a balance between water and mineral salts (especially sodium). When you drink too much water in a short time, the blood becomes diluted and the sodium concentration drops too low. This can lead to:
- Swelling of cells, including those in the brain
- Nausea and vomit
- Headache
- Mental confusion
- In severe cases, convulsions, coma and even death
The greatest risks arise in these circumstances:
- During intense sports (marathons, long training sessions) without salt replacement
- If you have kidney or heart problems
- If you drink too much water in a short time “for detoxification” or for online challenges (unfortunately it happens).
