The Aniene River is flooded with refrigerator carcasses.

The Aniene River, in Rome, can be considered a symbol of the environmental crisis, with uncivilized citizens, speculative entrepreneurs, and helpless local administrators. And a few well-intentioned volunteers who at least have the courage to report the wrongdoing.

The river has become a dumping ground for refrigerator carcasses, discarded by individuals unsure of how to dispose of them, and by organizations that illegally empty them, recovering the working components (such as copper) and dumping everything else in the Aniene River. In this case, they come from one of the largest landfills for household appliances ever seen in Italy. It's called "Frigo Valley" and is located in the municipality of Tivoli, a short distance from the A1 motorway bypass and the banks of the Aniene River. 

Abandoned refrigerators contain hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and refrigerant gases which, if released, are highly damaging to the ozone layer and river ecosystems.

An abandoned refrigerator in a river is much more than just “bulky waste”: it can cause various types of environmental damage and even indirect risks for people.

First, there is the problem of the refrigerants (the gases used in older cooling systems). Older models may contain substances such as CFCs or HFCs, which:

• <br> highly polluting for the atmosphere if you release,
• and in some cases even contribute to the greenhouse effect or to the destruction of the ozone layer (in the old CFCs).

Then there are the compressor oils and lubricants, that:

• they can end up in the water,
• they form oily films that reduce oxygenation,
• they harm fish and microorganisms.

Another problem is the degradation of materials:

• plastics and insulating foams fragment into microplastics,
• Metals and paints can release toxic substances over time.

From a physical point of view, a refrigerator in the river can also:

• obstruct the flow of water (especially if more waste accumulates),
• create stagnant areas that are conducive to degradation and bad odors,
• become a aquatic fauna trap (fish, birds, small mammals).

Finally, there are the health and landscape aspects: these objects foster a degraded environment, which often attracts further illegal dumping.

Unfortunately, the refrigerator carcasses dumped in the Aniene River ultimately end up in the already highly polluted Tiber River. Recent surveys in the urban stretch have identified fecal contamination levels up to 400 times higher than the limits for bathing and 80 times higher than the recommended threshold for wastewater treatment plants. 

The only good news in this devastating situation is that the carcasses littering the Aniene were discovered by volunteers who frequently navigate the river to pinpoint the areas of greatest environmental concern.
