During the Christmas holidays, it's impossible to resist the many sweet and savory treats on our tables. Lunch after lunch, dinner after dinner, inevitably we end up putting on a few pounds. Don't look sad, though, because getting back into shape isn't difficult at all : all it takes is a few small sacrifices, such as cutting down on sweets and only enjoying them for breakfast, and at least half an hour a day of brisk walking or physical activity at the gym. Fasting is absolutely forbidden: it's not good for your health or your mood.
So beware of drastic diets and do-it-yourself remedies that won't help you solve the problem. To start, reduce portions but don't skip main meals like lunch or dinner. Avoid fatty foods and favor seasonal fruits and vegetables and herbal teas.
And here's some advice from Dr. Sara Campolonghi, a psychologist and nutrition coach specializing in eating behavior and weight management, for getting back into shape after the holidays correctly and with lasting results:
- The first tip for staying fit over time is to enjoy the holidays, and even occasional overeating—which, however, should represent occasional special moments—before returning to a regular, healthy diet throughout our daily lives. The risk is triggering a vicious cycle whereby, following an overeating, we force ourselves to deprive ourselves of food to compensate, which, however, will inevitably be followed by further overeating, and so on, giving rise to the so-called "yo-yo syndrome," which involves constant weight fluctuations, frustration, and a poor relationship with food.
- Therefore, following a large meal, it is absolutely it is not advisable to drastically reduce food quantities, while we need to start carefully choosing the quality and variety of foods again.
- Reduce meals out and the most elaborate dishes.
- Increase vegetable consumption, fruit, vegetable and whole grains.
- Combine it all in simple one-dish meals, colorful, tasty and filling, but healthy.
This way you will get back into shape naturally, and food will be an ally for our well-being , no longer an enemy.
